Welcome all Shiners!!!

SHINERAMA is above and beyond the most rewarding event you will participate in during the school year, and not to mention one of the most fun!! You will be one of over 35,000 students across the country who will be participating in SHINERAMA in an effort to raise money for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

What is Cystic Fibrosis?
•    A fatal, inherited disease which attacks the respiratory and digestive systems
•    It is estimated that one in every 3,600 children born in Canada has CF
•    CF kills more Canadian children than any other inherited disease
•    In the past 30 years research has increased the median age of survival of CF sufferers from under 4 years of age to the age of 37
History

Shinerama is an annual fundraiser that universities from across the country take part in to raise money in the fight against Cystic Fibrosis. Shinerama began in 1961 at Waterloo Lutheran University (now Wilfred Laurier University) as a way to incorporate charity work into the university’s orientation activities. Students shined shoes and raised about $1,000 for a local charity. The chapter of the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Waterloo saw great potential in Shinerama, and introduced it to the CCFF. Eventually, more and more universities began jumping in, and today universities from across the country now have their own Shinerama campaigns, and raise close to a million dollars each year for the CCFF!

Our Dedication
This year, the Cape Breton University Students’ Union will celebrate 30 years of involvement with Shinerama. To date, the Cape Breton University community has raised over $130,000 for CF research and care.

Our annual Shinerama softball tournament and Shine Day have been a tradition each September. This year our Shinerama softball tournament will be held on Saturday, September 12th and our SHINE DAY will be on Saturday, September 26th. Adding to this tradition is the Shinerama Golf tournament which is now in its third year and is continually growing bigger and better each year. The Golf Tournament will be held on Friday August 14th at the Lingan Golf and Country Club in Sydney and will feature a 1:00 p.m. shotgun start with games on various holes, BBQs and lots of prizes to be won!
 A new fundraiser added this year is our Shine-on Pendants which will be available for purchase all throughout our campaign! You can also check the shine-on pendant option on your frosh pack order form for only $10 extra and get an national award-winning accessory for shine-day and beyond!  Proceeds from the sale of these pendants go directly to our CBU Shinerama Campaign! These gorgeous clay necklaces look great on guys and girls and will be found around the necks of your Frosh Leaders.  Please wear your support for this great cause!

So now you may be asking yourself... HOW CAN I HELP? During the year you can be involved in fundraisers throughout the community such as car washes, bar blitzs, a golf tournament, softball tournament, face painting and then of course SHINE DAY!! You can also go onto www.shinerama.ca and make online donations to our CBU Students’ Union Shiner Survivor’s Team in which all the money you raise goes directly to the charity, and puts CBU that much closer to reaching our goal.
